Breast implant tissue expanders are used in cases of breast reconstruction. Breast implants are so popular due to their remarkable results for both reconstructed and natural breasts, but the downside is that after a woman loses one or both breasts to cancer and any other situation, she is often left with few options. Breast reconstructive surgery can sometimes be difficult to navigate, especially since there's no "one-size-fits-all" solution. Breast reconstructive surgery may involve skin expanders, either called autologous tissue expanders or composite tissue expanders. Breast implant tissue expanders are also known as water expanders because they contain sterile saline suspended in an envelope of thin plastic. It looks like a sandwich baggie filled with fluid which is then inserted into the body through a small incision.
Breast implant tissue expanders may look like balloons, but they work in a very different way than those used for plastic surgery or other forms of cosmetic augmentation. They can also be called autologous tissue expansion (ATE) and fat grafting with expander devices and come in various shapes and sizes, making them more appropriate for certain types of reconstruction.

Breast implant tissue expanders play an important role for women who have undergone mastectomy procedures. They help stretch existing skin so that it will accommodate an implant. Today, they have become extremely popular cosmetic procedures, but they do require additional surgery to be inserted and adjusted; therefore, doctors encourage women to wait until the body has completely healed before making final decisions regarding breast augmentation with expanders or implants.
Breast implant tissue expanders are commonly used during the first stage of reconstruction after mastectomy surgeries. They help a woman's skin stretch enough to accommodate a breast implant, which is then inserted in a second surgery at a later date. They can also be used for other reconstructive surgeries involving breasts, including nipple reconstruction and breast lifts. This procedure generally requires only one surgery since the expander is removed once it has sufficiently stretched the skin for an implant insertion that takes place during a later surgery.
The expanders help heal wounds caused by mastectomy and other forms of breast cancer treatment, such as lumpectomy and radiation therapy. For some women, they also decrease the risk of complications like bleeding and infections because they provide an internal space for fluids to collect rather than pooling inside the body.
Demand for this product has been growing in recent years because its price is about half of the other types on the market. When it comes to high-quality implants that will last for up to 15 years, women choose them not only because they give an excellent cosmetic result but also because it meets their needs perfectly.
Many breast implants need to be replaced after 5-10 years because of the high risk of rupture and problems caused by aging, so they naturally opt for another type of Breast Implant Tissue Expander. This implant is also appealing because it allows a woman who has had children or experienced other physical changes to have desirable breasts once again. Another feature of this implant is the low cost. The material of the breast implant tissue expander is more flexible and natural than silicone gel and saline, so they can be inserted through a smaller incision.
North America to continue dominating the breast implant tissue expander market
The volume of global breast implants is large, mainly in developed countries. The largest number of patients in the world are Americans, Chinese and Brazilians. Plastic surgery has become very popular in recent years, especially among American women. According to statistics, there are more than a million Brazilian women who have undergone a plastic surgery operation, which represents more than 40% of all operations carried out by surgeons around the world. In addition to liposuction and nose correction, breasts enhancement is one of the most common surgical operations that Brazilian women perform. A survey conducted by IBOPE revealed that more than 130 thousand Brazilian women underwent this type of surgery last year only. And more than 26 thousand were between 18 and 25 years old. Besides reconstructions, plastic surgeons in the United States also perform many breast augmentations every year: more than 300 thousand cases. To increase their breasts, women usually take fat from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen or buttocks and then use it in the mammary glands. In this case, tissue expansion is used to expand skin and allow placement of an implant.
